Interactive Web Developer at What3Words

We’re looking for a capable Interactive Web Developer who knows code and has proven experience of writing it, as well as a good eye for design and can create engaging experiences that people will love to use.

We have a network of incredible businesses, NGOs and governments who use our technology to create efficiencies, grow businesses and improve lives. We’re also working on new products to engage consumers and better showcase how our technology can change everyday tasks.

Working with all aspects of our product stack you’ll have good experience of Linux, expertise in building gorgeous user interfaces on top of RESTful web APIs, databases and data stores and front-end tools and technologies including React, JavaScript, CSS/SASS and SCSS.


Build out front-end components; using React, JavaScript, HTML, CSS

Strategize and develop effective flow of information, ensuring that design solutions integrate technical and business logic

Work with other team members to build rich, compelling and highly interactive web sites and mobile experiences

Work with back-end developers to design web APIs that are appropriate for applications and fit the user interface

Consume and display data from back-end APIs as needed

Provide expert guidance on browsers, desktop and mobile platforms with a focus on UX, interactivity, motion and performance


React and JavaScript

2+ years of professional experience in interactive and Bachelors (or higher) degree in a creative discipline (relevant experience and training will be considered)

Advanced, proven knowledge of Object-Oriented JavaScript, modern JS libraries, React, Angular, Backbone, etc. ES 6, semantic HTML, CSS and Responsive tactics

Advanced working knowledge of CSS preprocessors (SASS, LESS, etc.) and task runners (Grunt, Gulp, etc.), templating systems (Handlebars, etc.), Module systems (AMD, CommonJS, etc.)

Advanced knowledge of building responsive sites for desktop, tablet, and mobile with proven advanced experience with coding, architecture, and writing reusable libraries

Expert image production experience working in Sketch/Photoshop/etc.

You will have:

Excellent communication skills with perfect spoken and written English. You must be comfortable showcasing your ideas to key stakeholders across the business

Good scripting capability

A focus on high quality software engineering work and attention to detail

The ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

A passion for software development and staying current with technology trends

The ability to talk to techies and non-techies in suitable language

Extra credit if you:

Have an appreciation for maps and location based services and know what a GIS is, what Leaflet and the Google Maps API are, and can articulate the difference between latitude and longitude

Passion for 3D engines / AR / VR

Have a passion for good user experience and design

Enjoy learning new skills in scripting languages and how to use those to showcase our products
